Manchester has been attacked by a swarm of giant bees!
Don’t panic… they are all harmless, and it’s all for a good cause!
Bee In The City is an art project of more than 100 giant bee sculptures, designed and decorated by artists and local groups. And if that wasn’t enough, there are plenty of “smaller” bees, decorated by local schools.
Whilst the humble bumble-bee has been an icon of Manchester City Centre for many years, most notably seen on street furniture, and of course on the famous Boddingtons Brewery, it was to become a symbol of hope, resilience and survival after the horrific terror attack at Manchester Arena on Monday 22nd May 2017, as concert goers were leaving a performance by Ariana Grande. The bombing sadly claimed 22 innocent lives.
The bees are on display in the City Centre, Salford, and surrounding areas for approximately 7 weeks, and after the event is finished, they will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to charity.
I hope to photograph all the sculptures during the summer. Watch this space!
